Huston Wins Hawaiian Open
John Huston rewrote the PGA Tour record book in Honolulu, giving the final Hawaiian Open a fitting sendoff.
Huston shot a closing 66 to finish with a 28-under-par 260, breaking the 27-under mark set by Ben Hogan and matched by Mike Souchak.
Huston needed a 62 to break the 257 Tour record for a 72-hole event, which was also set by Souchak at the Texas Open in 1955.
Tom Watson shot a 66 to finish second at 21-under 267 with Trevor Dodds in third.
A final round 70 gave Jim Albus a three-day total of 6-under par 207 and a one-shot Senior PGA Tour victory in the GTE Classic in Lutz, Fla., over Jose Maria Canizares, Kermit Zarley and Simon Hobday.
Tony Johnstone of Zimbabwe saw his lead narrowed to three shots over Ernie Els as rain prevented completion of the final round of the Alfred Dunhill PGA Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa. The completion of the final round is today.
Dale Eggeling, a 22-year LPGA veteran shot a 3-under-par 69, then made a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with Hiromi Kobayashi of Japan to win the rain-shortened Los Angeles Women’s Championship.
