Katja Seizinger of Germany became the first skier to win consecutive Olympic downhill gold medals when she won the women’s event in 1 minute, 28.89 seconds.

Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden finished second and Florence Masnada of France was third.

American Picabo Street finished sixth in 1:29.54.

Men’s bobsled

For the first time ever, there was no silver medal awarded in the two-man bobsled - because two golds were given out, an Olympic rarity. The Italian and Canadian teams took four runs and wound up dead even to collect a gold apiece. Germany placed third.

Men’s downhill skiing

Austrian superskier Hermann Maier grabbed gold in the oft-delayed men’s super-G, shaking off a strained knee and bruises suffered three days earlier in a spectacular free-fall crash during the downhill.

Fellow Austrian Hans Knauss and Didier Cuche of Switzerland shared the silver medal.

Women’s cross country skiing

It was multiple medal time for the Russian women’s team, with Larissa Lazuntina winning her fourth medal of the games and teammate Olga Danilova her third as half of the gold medal-winning women’s 4x5-kilometer relay.

Norway won the silver and Italy the bronze.

Men’s hockey

The second round of the Olympic hockey tournament continued with the Czechs bouncing Kazakstan 8-2 behind two goals from the Montreal Canadiens’ Martin Rucinsky. Earlier, the Russians beat Finland 4-3.

Curling

The Canadien women took the gold, but the Canadien men were upset by Switzerland in the first Olympic finals in curling. Switzerland won the men’s gold with a 9-3 victory. The Canadian women defeated Denmark 7-5 for the gold - but the losers’ silver was the first medal ever won in any sport by the Danes.

The U.S. men lost in the bronze medal game to Norway, while the women’s bronze went to Sweden.

Ski jumping

Kazuyoshi Funaki’s massive leap off the 120-meter hill gave Japan its first Olympic ski jump title in 26 years. The 22-year-old star jumped 132.5 meters and made perfect style marks to win the title. Jani Soininen of Finland won the silver and Japan’s Masahiko Harada took the bronze.

Men’s speedskating

The Netherlands won its first Winter Olympics gold medal in a speedskating sprint as Ids Postma set an Olympic record in the 1,000. Jan Bos won the silver to make a 1-2 finish for the Dutch, and Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan won the bronze.

Women’s biathlon

Russia’s Galina Koukleva won the gold medal in the women’s 7.5-kilometer sprint. She was seven-tenths of a second ahead of Germany’s Ursula Disl. Germany’s Katrin Apel finished third.

Figure skating

Russians Pasha Grishuk and Yevgeny Platov stayed in first place in ice dancing. Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsyannikov of Russia were second and Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat of France were third.

Women’s freestyle skiing

The preliminary round of the aerials was enough to all but eliminate Americans Tracy Evans and Stacey Blumer after they both botched their landings in the triple somersault. Nikki Stone, the top U.S. entry and strong medal favorite, competed later Sunday night.
