Covey Qualifies For Two Swim Finals
Joe Covey of West Valley advanced to the finals in two events at the Class 3A-2A boys high school swimming championships Thursday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Covey was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.45 seconds, finishing behind Jeff Guyman of Mercer Island, who swam to a meet-record time of 20.94
Covey was also second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.14, second again to Guyman, who was clocked in 45.73.
Downriver opens
Downriver Golf Course will open to the public today at 8 a.m. on 16 permanent greens. Tee times will be accepted beginning Saturday morning.
Idaho basketball
Top-ranked Lake City was stunned in the opening round of the Idaho A-1 girls tournament when the Timberwolves were defeated 65-49 by Centennial at Nampa.
Centennial got 22 points from sophomore Elisha Booth and 20 from senior Joann Whittaker to upset the previously undefeated Timberwolves.
Centennial led Lake City throughout, posting a 34-19 halftime advantage. Despite six 3-point field goals by the Timberwolves, the Patriots dominated under the boards to get 12 second-effort points. They also got 22 points off turnovers to 12 for Lake City and outscored the Timberwolves 21-3 from the free-throw line.
Lake City was led by Lindsay Herbert’s 15 points.
North Idaho’s other representative to the A-1 tournament, Post Falls, was a 59-51 victor over Highland.
Junior guard Janelle Ruen scored a game-high 27 points to lead Post Falls to its triumph.
In the A-2 tournament, Moscow fell to Sugar-Salem 62-59 and Shelley defeated Bonners Ferry 49-36 in first-round games.
In the second day of the A-4 tournament, Lakeside of Plummer was a winner in a consolation-bracket game, 29-28, over Hagerman. Kootenai of Harrison was eliminated by Greenleaf Friends Academy 47-46. , DataTimes
