Bullpups Knock Off Panthers G-Prep Earns District 8 Upset; Sheridan’s Career Ends In Loss
Matty McIntyre converted the second of two free throws with 3.8 seconds to play, giving the Greater Spokane League District 8 basketball tournament its traditional opening-round upset.
The sophomore’s basket and 19 points by workhorse Shane Hartnett lifted sixth-seeded Gonzaga Prep to a 45-44 win over third-seeded Mead on Tuesday in the boys bracket.
It will be the Bullpups’ first trip to regionals since 1994.
That was the biggest surprise in the four winner-to-regional, loser-out games at the Arena.
In the other boys game, fourth-seeded Lewis and Clark dropped fifth-seeded Rogers 56-44. In girls games, Linda Sheridan’s storied basketball coaching career came to an end as fourth-seeded Lewis and Clark upended ice-cold Shadle Park 42-37.
“Maybe we were a little too tight tonight,” Sheridan said, handling her last loss with the same class she had shown after her two state championships. “Maybe they were trying a little too hard for me.”
That came after third-seeded Mead routed University 61-32 behind Allie Bailey’s 16 points.
The winners play seeding games Thursday and Friday against the top two teams from the regular season.

The Bullpups (9-12) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit by pushing the ball up the floor and battling the bigger Panthers (14-7) evenly on the boards.
After trailing 25-15 at the half, Prep closed within 32-31 entering the fourth quarter. The Pups got their first lead on the opening possession when Aaron Thielman dumped the ball inside to Zac Yarbrough, who tossed in a short left-handed hook shot.
“We didn’t intend to slow it down,” Prep coach Mike Haugen said. “We wanted to run our transition, but when we got to halfcourt (we wanted to) be patient. The kids slowed everything down.”
From there, the lead changed hands six times and their were two ties.
With 38 seconds to play, Brian Wolverton converted a Nate Adams assist to tie the game. Prep ran the clock down to 3.8 seconds, when McIntyre was fouled.
“This week in practice we concentrated on rebounding, that killed us last time,” Hartnett said.

The intense defensive pressure of the Tigers (15-6) kept the Pirates (13-8) from putting anything together.
LC also benefitted from a 15-4 edge in offensive rebounds, including four by guard Luke Bowman, one of the shortest players on the court.
Tyrees Donastorg helped get the Tigers going with three assists and seven points in the first half.
“I just tried to come into the game and show our intentions,” Donastorg said. “We weren’t playing around, we mean business. This was the biggest game of our career so far. I wanted to leave it all on the court.”
The Tigers never put long runs together but slowly eased ahead, taking a 26-20 lead at the half, pushing it to 15 in the third quarter and keeping the lead in double figures throughout the fourth.

Mead 61, University 32
Allie Bailey had half of her game-high 16 points in the first quarter as the Panthers (16-5) took control early against the Titans (9-13).
“I just really focused on what I needed to do,” Bailey said. “It was do or die and I didn’t want my season to end.”
The Titans had two field goals in each of the first two quarters, shooting 25 percent to fall behind 28-10..
“Part of it is focusing,” Mead coach Beth Wing said. “Our goal was to not let U-Hi think they were in it, ever.”

LC 42, Shadle Park 37
“Free throws,” Sheridan said, “that’s all it is.”
She was right. The Highlanders (11-10) pounded the ball inside against the Tigers (10-11), got to the line 21 times and made just seven.
And that was just the first half when LC, trailing 12-6 after one quarter, opened a 23-18 lead.
It didn’t get much better in the second half. Shadle made just 8 of 18 free throws in the second half. The total was 15 of 39.
“If we come out and match the other team’s intensity, we do fine,” LC coach Jim Redmon said. “We’ve had that kind of season, we’ve had our ups and downs. I think a lot of it has to do with our age.”
LC makes its first trip to regionals since 1993.
