Rock Creek Mine Foes Sponsoring Meetings

From Staff And Wire Reports

Three environmental groups opposed to sinking a mine in the Cabinet Mountains will sponsor informational meetings next week on ASARCO’s Rock Creek mine proposal.

The copper and silver mine, expected to be one of the world’s largest, would be near Noxon, Mont.

The Rock Creek Alliance, Clark Fork Pend-Oreille Coalition and Cabinet Resource Group have invited a panel of experts to address concerns about the mine.

Members of the panel include Pierre Bordenave, a soil specialist; Bob Guilfoyle, from United Mine Workers of America; and Kevin Keenan, a former Montana water quality enforcement official.

The meetings also will address the recently released revised environmental impact statement for the mine. The forums are in Sandpoint on Feb. 4 at the Edgewater Resort and Feb. 5 at the Noxon School. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m.

Government officials have not yet approved plans to open the mine. Public hearings on the environmental impact statement must take place first and are scheduled for Feb. 10, 11 and 12.

The hearings are in Sandpoint at the Panida Theater; at the Noxon School; and in Missoula at Hellgate Middle School. The hearings all begin at 7 p.m. , DataTimes
