Pushie Grandmas Will Tee It Up

The Pushie Grandmas, in constant pursuit of new ways to benefit victims of multiple sclerosis, are pushing their way into golf.

The charitable organization, which was formed 18 years ago, is perhaps best known for its annual Push-A-Thon in which members secure monetary pledges in accordance with the number of miles they can push a wheelchair.

But this year, with the help of the Seattle Seahawks Community Outreach Alumni, the group will stage its inaugural Pushie Grandmas vs. MS golf tournament. The four-person scramble event will be held July 25 at the Fairways Golf Course.

Entry fee is $40 per person and includes greens fees, food and prizes. Among the 16 former Seahawks players who have signed up to play are Sam Adkins, John Yarno, Nesby Glasgow, Mel Jenkins and Steve Myer.

Tournament chairperson Barb Iwai said early entrants will be paired with a former Seahawk or one of the other celebrity players who have volunteered their time.

Junior Pro Classic qualifying

Young golfers who are not members of the Washington Junior Golf Association will get their chance July 7 to qualify for this year’s Junior Pro Classic tournament, which will be held July 26 at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.

The 18-hole, medal-play qualifying event will start at 2 p.m. at Downriver Golf Course and is open to non-WJGA members from 12 to 17 years of age. Entry fee is $5 and includes greens fees, range privileges, tee prizes and lunch.

Six golfers will qualify to play with 34 WJGA members in the Junior Pro Classic, which is being held for the second year in conjunction with the fifth-annual Pro Classic (July 26-27) that features members of the Senior PGA Tour.

The top male and female finishers in the Junior Pro Classic will play the following day at Qualchan with one of the Senior professionals in the popular pro-am scramble event of the Pro Classic.

Entry forms for the qualifying tournament are available at all area golf courses. Anyone wanting more information can call Pro Classic Charities at (509) 448-2272.
