Cyclists Ejected

Compiled From Wire Services

World Cup champion Michele Bartoli and 128 others were thrown out of the Tirreno-Adriatico cycling race after staging a protest by slowly finishing the day’s spill-marred stage.

Rain made for slick and treacherous roads, and with about 30 miles to go in the 108-mile stage, more than half the field was involved in a mass spill and collisions.

Some who fell asked organizers to hold up the leaders while they got back on their bicycles and resumed racing.

Officials refused, and a large group protested by riding at a very relaxed pace, finishing more than 27 minutes behind winner Erik Zabel of Germany.
