Howard Anderson Spokane

Funeral for Howard A. Anderson, 69, will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home - South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in Luverne, Minn., died Saturday.

He moved to Spokane with his family 61 years ago. He delivered newspapers, was a hod carrier and worked on construction of the Veterans Hospital.

Mr. Anderson obtained a degree in business administration from Gonzaga University in 1950, and worked for Washington Trust Bank in the accounting department.

He served in the Naval Reserve during the Korean War and after returning to Spokane obtained his law degree from Gonzaga in 1956. He worked for Justice Frank P. Weaver in Olympia as a clerk of the State Supreme Court for one year.

In 1957 Mr. Anderson was hired as a deputy prosecuting attorney in Spokane and in 1961 went to work as the assistant corporation counsel for the city of Spokane. He was serving as chief assistant city attorney when he resigned to enter private practice with the law firm of Donald Morrison, Eugene Huppin and Robert Ewing in 1965.

During his time in private practice he served on the City of Spokane Civil Service Commission from 1971 to 1986, serving as chairman for 12 years.

He also served on the board of trustees for the Spokane County Bar Association for four years, as an investigator for the Washington State Bar Association and as a Superior Court judge pro tem for several of years.

Mr. Anderson taught landlord-tenant law as an adjunct professor for Gonzaga Law School. He retired in 1993.

He served on the board of trustees for Riverview retirement community and was a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Spokane Club. He was an active member of the Spokane County Bar Association, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Salem Lutheran Church and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

His first wife, Verneita Anderson, died in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Pamela; two daughters, Sheryl Anderson Barton of Coeur d’Alene and Karen Holcomb of Spokane; four sons, Bruce, Mark and Brian Anderson, all of Spokane, and Paul Anderson of Fairfax, Va.; a stepson, Bradford Alden of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Heidi Alden of Spokane and Holly Alden of New York City; a brother, Lawrence Anderson of Spokane, and 13 grandchildren.

Robert Loosmore Spokane

Vigil service for Robert A. Loosmore, 76, will be at 6 p.m. today at St. Charles Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Loosmore, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

He graduated in 1929 from Gonzaga High School and served in the Air Force.

Mr. Loosmore retired in 1977 after 17 years as property manager for Goodale and Barbieri.

He was a charter member of St. Charles Catholic Church, a life member of the Spokane Elks Lodge, was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, past president of the Spokane Central Lions Club, past president of Building Owners and Managers, former member of St. Joseph’s Children’s Home Advisory Board, past chairman of Gonzaga Prep Associates and past vice president of Inland Empire Boy Scout Council.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Glennavon; a sister, Helen O’Reilly of Apple Valley, Calif.; and two brothers, Thomas Loosmore of Denver and William Loosmore of Sandpoint.

Edna Kirby Spokane

Funeral for Edna May Kirby, 94, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kirby, who was a 56-year resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

Born in Marysville, Mont., Mrs. Kirby worked as a buyer for The Crescent for many years and was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Her husband, John, died in 1981.

Survivors include a son, Bob Guilbault of Spokane; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

William Siers Spokane

Vigil service for William Carl Siers, 93, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Siers, who was a 57-year resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

He was born in St. Paul, Minn., and later worked for Kaiser Aluminum at Trentwood for 20 years as a packman weigher.

Mr. Siers was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge 2, the Steelworkers Union and the Farwell Senior Center.

He was an avid pool player and dancer.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Doris; two sons, Richard Siers of Spokane and Randall Siers of Everett; two daughters, Diane Houston of San Jose, Calif., and Francene Onzay of Spokane; a stepson, Harvey Hale of Deer Park, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Gladys Sullivan of Auburn, Wash.; two sisters, Audrey Harmon of Spokane and Helen Lowe of Newport, Wash.; 18 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

William ‘Ernie’ McGee Metaline Falls, Wash.

Memorial service for William Ernest “Ernie” McGee, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ in Metaline Falls. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Metaline Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McGee, who was born in Potlatch, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He graduated in 1936 from Potlatch High School and moved from Moscow, Idaho, to north Pend Oreille County in 1945.

He he married Mayme Bower-Colegrove that year in Ione, Wash.

Mr. McGee worked in small mills and sawed at blister rust camps. During World War II he worked several defense jobs, including at the Farragut Naval Station in Bayview, Idaho.

He worked at the Pend Oreille Mine for three years, then at Lehigh Portland Cement for 33 years before retiring in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, William McGee of Ferndale, Wash., Donald Colegrove of Spokane and Gerald Colegrove of Metaline Falls; two daughters, Joyce Evans and Janet Rice, both of Metaline Falls; a sister, Eileen Moe of Post Falls; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Metaline Falls Fire District or the United Church of Christ.

Frances Dakers Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Frances Genevieve Dakers, 83, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Seattle. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dakers, who was born in Bothell, Wash., died Saturday.

She was a longtime Seattle area resident and had done extensive traveling throughout Scotland, England, Morocco and Spain.

Mrs. Dakers recently moved to Coeur d’Alene.

She was a member of the Rebekah Circle of the Haller Lake United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dakers was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur.

Survivors include a daughter, Jan Lenhart of Coeur d’Alene; a son, Dean Dakers of Seattle; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Randal ‘Randy’ Werre Spokane

Memorial service for Randal E. ‘Randy’ Werre, 41, will be at 3 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Werre, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1974.

Mr. Werre worked in hotel management for most of his life, including recently in the San Francisco area.

He moved back to Spokane in 1996.

Survivors include his mother, Jean Werre of Spokane; his father, Emil Werre of Spokane; and four brothers, Jeffrey, Tom, Tim and Greg, all of Spokane.

Frances (Meyer) Emter Davenport, Wash

Funeral service and committal for Frances (Meyer) Emter, 71, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gethsemane Cemetery, 37600 S. Pacific Highway, Federal Way, Wash. Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Emter, who was born in Glen Ullin, N.D., died Thursday at her daughter’s home in Pacific, Wash.

She graduated from high school and in 1948 married Anton Emter in Glen Ullin.

Mrs. Emter taught school in southeast North Dakota for one year before they moved to Spokane in 1951.

They settled in Davenport in 1991.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Linda Jorgensen of Pacific, and Sharon Mershon and Kathleen Mertens, both of Spokane; four sons, Terrence Emter of Yakima, Allen and Wayne Emter, both of Pacific, and Ronald Emter of Wenatchee; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Marit Aspebakken Spokane

Visitation for Marit Aspebakken, 71, will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Aspebakken, who was born in Oyer, Norway, died Friday.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church, and in 1953 immigrated to the United States.

She married Ivar Aspebakken that year in Froid, Mont. He had arrived from Norway five years earlier.

In 1955 they moved to Missoula, where she became a U.S. citizen in 1959.

The couple moved to Spokane in 1969, and she worked as a homemaker and baby sitter.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway Tordenskjold Lodge.

Survivors include her husband; a son, John Aspebakken of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Helen Scherer of Overland Park, Kan.; and two sisters, Tonny Aspebakken of Biri, Norway, and Agnes Eide of Vinstra, Norway.

Frances Hickey Newport, Wash.

A private commital service for Frances Hickey, 74, will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Hickey, a 10-year resident of Newport, died Thursday.

She was born in Spokane and graduated in 1942 from North Central High School. She graduated from college in 1946 in York, Neb.

She worked for Shell Oil Co. as a patent searcher for 25 years, living in San Francisco.

Ms. Hickey then began working in public relations for Shell Oil Co. in Houston before retiring in 1984.

Survivors include two sisters, Marjorie Welsh of Spokane and Carol Rogers of Bremerton; and a brother, David Hickey of Sunnyvale, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Gladys Scribner Priest River, Idaho

Memorial inurnment service for Gladys Lucille Scribner, 85, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scribner, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

In 1934 she married John Scribner in Spokane, and they moved to Priest River in 1954. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Priest River Senior Citizens Group and a past secretary for the old Settlement Grange.

Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, John Scribner of Priest River; a daughter, Shirley Feeder of Beaverton, Ore.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Helen Waterman Spokane

Funeral for Helen L. Waterman, 88, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Waterman, who was a 74-year resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She was born in Sparta, Ill., and graduated from North Central High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Waterman was a member of the Young Women’s Christian Association, American Association of Retired Persons, Brotherhood of Friends Lodge and Retired Employees Council Chapter 13.

Her husband, Claude Waterman, died in 1966.

Mrs. Waterman is survived by a nephew, Doug Caldwell of Spokane.

Edward Johnson Medical Lake

Memorial service for Edward Lee Johnson, 72, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Fairchild Air Force Base Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Akron, Ohio, died Thursday.

He was raised in Glendale, Calif., and retired in 1970 after 20 years of service in the Air Force, where he served as a survival instructor.

Mr. Johnson owned and operated a food service company in Spokane, and owned and operated a steak house and lounge in Metaline, Wash.

He had been a resident of Spokane County since 1966 and was a member of the Airway Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Spokane Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Georgie; a sister, Gloria Porter of Medical Lake; three brothers, Robert Johnson of Las Vegas, Earl Johnson of Semi Valley, Calif., and Ross Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Norma Davidson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Norma E. Davidson, 71, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Mrs. Davidson, who was born in Leavenworth, Wash., died Sunday.

She lived in Omak, Wash., before moving to Bonners Ferry in 1965 and to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1967.

Mrs. Davidson had worked as a medical assistant at Coeur d’Alene Eye Clinic and was active in Cancer Community Charities (3 C’s), American Cancer Society and the Duplicate Bridge Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Evert.

Survivors include a son, Charlie Kelson of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Robin Eisland of Hayden Lake, Idaho; two sisters, Janet Krogseth of Liberty Lake and Dorothy Riekena of Coeur d’Alene; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Margaret Gohrman King Sequim, Wash.

Funeral for Margaret Virginia Gohrman King, 84, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Sequim Valley Chapel in Sequim is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. King, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

She was a graduate from North Central High School.

In 1932 she married Sam Gohrman in Newport, Wash., and they moved to Stockton, Calif., where she worked in a cannery during the Depression. In 1936 they moved back to Spokane. Her husband died in 1974.

In 1977 she moved to Sequim and married Ken King there. He died in 1984.

Mrs. King is survived by a son, Henry Gohrman of Mount Vernon, Wash.; a daughter, Cecil Black of Port Angeles, Wash.; two brothers, George Finch of Turlock, Calif., and Tom Finch of Missoula; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robert VanderVert Spokane

Funeral service for Robert A. VanderVert, 83, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. VanderVert, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. VanderVert was the proprietor of the VanderVert School of Flying for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Charles Parish, the Q.B.’s Spokane Hangar, the Spokane Club, the Brotherhood of Friends and the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Dollie; a daughter, Susan Mewborn of Lincoln City, Ore.; a stepson, William Parker of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a brother, Curtis VanderVert, and a sister Katharyn Rij, both of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities or to the American Cancer Society.

Marguerite LaPray Curlew, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Marguerite LaPray, 82, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Republic, Wash. Burial will follow at the Curlew Cemetery. Bergh Funeral Service in Republic is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. LaPray, who was born in Washington state, died Saturday.

She graduated in 1934 from Curlew High School.

In 1937 she married Jeff LaPray in Republic, and they moved to Spokane. In 1968 they moved back to Curlew.

Mrs. LaPray was a seamstress and was a member of the Curlew St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Colville Confederated Tribes.

Her husband died in 1988.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosalie McDonald of Moses Lake and Marceline of Spokane; a brother, Truman Nelson of Oroville, Wash.; a sister, Rosalie Dunn of Curlew; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Owes Spokane

Private inurnment for Elizabeth Owes, 84, will be at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Owes, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Northwestern Business College.

Mrs. Owes was the first employee of the Medical Service Bureau, where she worked for eight years before raising a family.

In her later years she worked in the family business, R.E. Carpets, and created and designed picture rugs.

She was one of the original organizers of the Spokane Chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

Mrs. Owes was a charter donor of the museum of Native American Cultures and was active in garden clubs and spring flower exhibits.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Robert; a daughter, Marj Edlund of Olympia; a son, Ronald Owes of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
