Gonzaga University students studying psychology, biology, political science and other fields will be required next year to take a diversity course to graduate.

A three-credit course on diversity will be required for new freshmen entering the College of Arts and Sciences in the fall 1999. The college is the largest at Gonzaga, with 300 to 350 freshmen, said the Rev. Michael McFarland, dean of the college.

McFarland said the requirement meets the Jesuit mission of education and demands by students for greater training on race, ethnicity and culture.

“Students will need this as they move into the workplace,” McFarland said.
