Idaho State Selects Cougars Assistant WSU Football Will Say Goodbye To Price’S Longtime Lieutenant

When the 1999 football season opens, Larry Lewis, for the first time since 1981, will not be on the sidelines coaching with Washington State University’s Mike Price.

Lewis, 41, today will be named the head coach at Idaho State.

“Idaho State is very fortunate to have Larry Lewis as their new head coach,” Price said of his longtime defensive assistant. “He has been like a brother to me.”

Lewis first worked with Price 18 years ago at Weber State.

Lewis is a 1981 graduate of Boise State, where he was a starting linebacker for the 1980 NCAA Division I-AA national champions.

He has coached WSU defensive ends since 1989. In 1994, he was named assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.

Lewis will succeed Tom Walsh, who was fired, along with athletic director Irv Cross, on Nov. 5. He was chosen over Utah defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham, Brigham Young defensive coordinator Ken Schmidt and Dixie College head coach Greg Croshaw.

Walsh concluded his tenure Saturday, when the Bengals put a bright finish on their ninth consecutive losing season by upsetting Cal State Northridge.
