Contest Promotes Recycling Hate Mail

Human rights advocates in Bonner County are challenging area residents to transform white supremacist literature into “something peaceful and useful.”

The Concerned Citizens of Sandpoint, a coalition of the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force, business and political leaders, is sponsoring a contest for ideas on what to do with the literature.

For instance, an anti-Semitic scroll that was mailed to thousands of homes this fall could be cut up and folded into origami peace doves for the holidays, Concerned Citizens suggests. The group also suggests weaving the videotaped interview with Aryan Nations leader Richard Butler into a floor mat.

Prizes will be awarded for the 10 best suggestions. The grand prize is a $50 gift certificate to St. Bernard’s Restaurant at Schweitzer Mountain Resort and two one-day ski passes.
