Exner-Led Eastern Washington Defeats Weber State In Four Games

Kim Exner had 25 kills, seven blocks and hit .434 as Eastern Washington (13-2, 5-1) defeated Weber State 15-7, 15-11, 10-15, 15-7 in a Big Sky Conference volleyball match at Ogden, Utah, on Saturday.

Angie Hall added four aces and Kim Maxwell six blocks for EWU. Laura Black and Melissa Leonard of WSU (9-10, 4-3) had 20 kills apiece.

Amy McCammond had 17 kills, 16 digs and hit .429 as Portland (8-7, 2-1 West Coast Conference) defeated visiting Gonzaga 15-10, 15-3, 18-16.

Heather Osberg had 16 kills and Aimee Wilson 22 digs for GU (4-13, 1-2).

Sharon Barnett had 15 kills and hit .333 as NAIA No. 15 George Fox (16-1, 10-0) defeated Whitworth 15-13, 15-2, 15-3 in a Northwest Conference match at Newberg, Ore.

Mary Hubele of the Pirates (2-15, 1-8) had 11 kills and nine digs.

Kortney Stewart had 12 kills and eight digs as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Columbia Basin 15-4, 15-8 in the final of the eight-team Clackamas Tournament at Oregon City, Ore.

Shannon Nelson and Jacque Willsey made the all-tournament team for the Sasquatch (23-12).

Becky Meek totaled 27 kills and 11 blocks as visiting Boise State (11-6, 4-2) defeated Idaho 15-6, 15-11, 13-15, 16-14 in a Big West Conference match before a season-high crowd of 1,202. Beth Craig had a career-best 27 kills for the Vandals (10-9, 3-3).

Cross country

Oregon’s Matt Davis, of Mead High, finished sixth and led the 10th-ranked Ducks to second place at the men’s PreNCAA Invitational at Lawrence, Kan.

Davis finished the 8,000 meters in 24 minutes, 47.65 seconds. His old Mead teammates aided Oregon, with Rob Aubrey (25:22.76) placing 19th and Micah Davis (25:22.76) 24th. Top-ranked Stanford won with 80 points while Oregon scored 103.

Bernard Lagat (24:42) placed fourth for 17th-place Washington State.

Stanford also won the women’s race, 65-138 over Arizona. Arizona’s Kristen Parrish (17:50.50), of Ferris High, placed 15th in the 5,000-meter race.

CCS’ men and women swept the Crystal Springs Invitational at Modesto Junior College in San Francisco.

CCS men’s runners finished 3-4-5, topped by James Berry’s 21:09 for 4.19 miles. Berry led for 3 miles before Michael Kasahun (20:42) of Fresno (Calif.) City College and Juan Pablo (20:44) of West Valley (Calif.) CC passed him.

The CCS women placed nine in the top 24, led by runner-up Colleen Huck (18:04 for 2.97 miles) and third-place Devin Huck (18:06).

Annie Scott (18:55.8 for 5,000 meters) placed eighth to top the Whitworth women’s fourth-place finish at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Wash.

The Whitworth men finished ninth among 12 teams. Ryan Pauling of Cheney finished third (24:56.8, 8,000 meters) to lead PLU to second place.

Men’s soccer

Peter Townsend intercepted the ball from 20 yards out and scored at 34 minutes as Clark (8-2-3) defeated CCS 1-0 at Troutdale, Ore. The Penguins lead the Southern Division of the NWAACC while the Sasquatch (9-1-1) lead the Eastern Division.

Women’s soccer

Tara Ferrin’s penalty kick at 14:14 allowed visiting Weber State (10-2) to edge Eastern Washington 1-0 in a non-conference match. The Eagles are 1-9-1.

Women’s tennis

WSU won all seven singles finals and all three doubles titles at its seventh Cougar Classic. Patrycja Gajdzik defeated Idaho’s Katrina Burke 6-2, 6-4 in No. 1 singles, and Andrea Reisz and Tamara Filipovic defeated teammates Sarah Burrows and Erica Perkins 8-3 in No. 1 doubles.
