Hearing Discusses Berms For Cda River

The use of rock berms to slow erosion along the Coeur d’Alene River will be discussed at a public hearing today in Coeur d’Alene.

The hearing, called by the Idaho Department of Lands, will begin at 10 a.m. at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game office, 2750 Kathleen Ave.

The lands department, as well as the Army Corps of Engineers, must grant permits for the erosion control project planned by the Silver Valley Natural Resource Trustees.

The state-funded project is an experiment to control riverbank erosion caused by power boats and spring floodwaters. Because the shoreline is contaminated with toxic metals from historic mining practices, the goal is to keep the sediment from washing into the river.

The hearing will give people a chance to ask questions of engineers who have designed the rock berms, which will be placed at key areas over five miles between the Old Mission at Cataldo and the Rose Lake bridge.

The Department of Lands comment period ends today. At an afternoon meeting, trustees probably will put out to bid a small portion of work that will begin this winter, coordinator Marti Calabretta said.
