Repeat Win For Cheney Professional

Todd Pence of Cheney, headed for the PGA Tour qualifying school this fall, held off a trio of challengers Sunday to successfully defend his 1997 Montana Open title at Larchmont Golf Course in Missoula.

Barely past his first full year as a pro, Pence shot a final-round 3-under-par 69 to finish 13 under with a total of 203 for the three-day tourney. He won $4,500.

Tom Anderson of Laurel, Mont.; Rob Wilson of Great Falls, Mont.; and Jeff Tachell of Snoqualmie, Wash., finished one shot back at 204.

Anderson came up short despite sandwiching a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole between birdies on Nos. 16 and 18. Wilson birdied 15, 16 and 17 but couldn’t birdie 18 to force a playoff.

Clint Wallman of Spokane finished fifth with a total of 206.
