Bob Beebe, who taught fourth-graders at Heyburn Elementary before teaching at St. Maries Middle School, has retired because of health problems. Trustees accepted Beebe’s resignation at a Sept. 14 meeting.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
City officials and residents of Dover are renewing attempts to preserve public access to Dover Beach. Property owner Dover Enterprises has sought to limit public access to Dover Beach due to vandalism and other property crimes over the years. The council received more than 50 letters from residents concerning access to the beach at a meeting Thursday.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The Boundary County Library will hold “Red Apple, Green Apple” on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The library invites 2- and 3-year-old children and their parents for Story Time. Old clothes are advised for kids, because they will be painting.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Rathdrum
The Rathdrum Mountain Gem 4-H Club is sponsoring an event called Saddle Up for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The fund-raiser trail ride is set for Oct. 4, and participants will gather donations for each mile completed. The ride will start at 9 a.m. at the Thimbleberry campground at Farragut State Park. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Moscow will hold its annual rummage sale at the Latah County Fairgrounds Oct. 2 and 3. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Blaming welfare reform for sharp declines in student enrollment, the Newport School District is singing the financial blues. After budgeting for 1,480 students, the district could be short by 140. Each child missing means fewer state dollars. Already, students are paying a fee to participate in extracurricular activities and are facing limited elective class selection. Cuts will go deeper, school officials say.

Craft exhibitors should reserve space now for the annual Christmas Craft Bazaar, sponsored by Cheney Parks and Recreation. A 3-by-8-foot space can be reserved for $20 by calling 235-7295. The bazaar will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at City Hall. It is free and open to the public.

More than 400 worldwide mechanical and materials development visionaries will gather at Washington State University in Pullman today through Wednesday. The 35th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science keynote speaker is 1991 Nobel laureate in physics, PierreGilles de Gennes of Ecole Superieur de Physique & Chemie. His speech begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday in Compton Union Hall auditorium.
