Eastern Washington Set For Annual Bash
A weekend of fun is slated for May 7-8 during the 18th annual Orland Killin weekend at Eastern Washington University.
Activities include golf, football and volleyball scrimmages and the Killin Dinner-Dance. The event raises funds for the Orland Killin Academic Scholarship Fund and athletic scholarships.
The dinner-dance costs $50 per person. Reserved tables of 10 are available for $500.
On tap are the 12th annual Coaches Golf Tournament May 7 at The Fairways Golf Course. Cost is $50 and includes greens fees, awards and a post-tournament party.
Eastern’s football and volleyball squads will scrimmage May 8. The Red-White football game will be at 2 p.m. The alumni volleyball match is at 3.

Baseball
Three players from Greater Spokane League schools - Chet Womach of Shadle Park, Cole Young of Mt. Spokane and Justin Folkins of Central Valley - have signed letters of intent to play at Community Colleges of Spokane.
The Spokane Blue Devils senior American Legion team will hold an informational meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in the Shadle Park High School Gymnasium.
The team has players from Shadle Park, North Central, Lakeside, Northwest Christian, Deer Park, Riverside, Chewelah, Colville and Kettle Falls.

Basketball
The Spokane Hoops 17-U and Action Sportswear 15-U boys teams from Spokane won qualifying tournaments in Yakima last weekend to advance to AAU nationals.
Spokane Hoops, coached by Dave Pounds, will travel to Orlando, Fla. The team includes Jordan Bjork, Kyle Boast, Billy Etter, Kirby Fike, Emery Meeks, Andrew Mills, Jake Pounds, Jon Ryan, Matt Tabisz and Andy Zelinski.
Action Sportswear, coached by Todd Swanson, will go to Indianapolis. The players are Josh Dvork (who had 33 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game), Jason Dixon, Corey Cody, Josh Wilponen, David Kopczynski, Erin Coleman, Brian Stephenson, Matt Ward, Andrew Moulton, Kevin Tate and Jeff Alton.
Bicycling
For a fourth year, the Spokane Bicycle Club will sponsor a “bike corral” where Bloomsday participants can leave their bicycles while taking part in the May 2 race.
Bikes will be watched behind a secured fence in Riverfront Park. The service is free.
The site will be in Riverfront Park’s central meadow. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Riders are encouraged to bring a lock to secure their bike, and leave their helmet and warmup clothing, too.

College scene
Seventy-nine Eastern Washington University athletes had a grade-point average of 3.5 or better to earn Dean’s List recognition in the winter quarter of 1998-99.
Eastern’s 287 athletes had a 3.06 GPA, and 166 of them had GPAs of 3.0 or better. Women athletes had a 3.27 GPA, men 2.89.
Leading the list were women’s basketball player Heather Dukes, a senior, and track and field athlete Christie Kight, a freshman, who had perfect 4.0 GPAs for a second straight quarter.
Volleyball players Lea Ruhl, a 1996 graduate of Ferris High School, and JoEne Heimbigner, a 1996 graduate of Shadle Park, also had 4.0 GPAs in the winter.
Fourty-six EWU athletes were selected to Big Sky Conference All-Academic teams for winter quarter.

The Big Sky Conference winter All-Academic teams include Montana junior Katie Kneeshaw of Colfax, a recreation management major, and Montana State junior Emily Thompson of Mead, a history teaching major, in women’s indoor track and field.
The Washington State women’s swimming team ranks second in the nation in academics according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, and 12 Cougars made the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic team.
WSU swimmers received “Superior” recognition for a combined 3.38 GPA fall semester. This is the second straight year WSU has been a top-10 CSCAA school. Last season, it tied for 10th with a 3.23 GPA.
The Pac-10 named seniors Anna Hohmann and Julie Thom to the All-Academic second team.
Thom, a senor, earned the honor for a third time. She is a kinesiology major with a 3.53 GPA. Hohmann, an accounting major, has a 3.26 GPA.
Carrie Breed, Gretchen Chambers, Jessica Chisholm, Wendy Enderle, Sarah Ewan (Colville), Katie Keller, Kelley Miedema, Suzanne Muirhead, Elizabeth Schmied and Aimee Walters earned honorable mention.
Twenty WSU track and field athletes, 13 of them women, have been named to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic teams for the indoor season.

Mead graduate Regan Freuen, who will receive her masters in sociology at Stanford in June, picked up two special awards when the Cardinal honored its women’s basketball team.
Freuen, a fifth-year senior, received the Roland D. Ciaranello Award for academics and leadership and the E-Trade Community Service Award. She was honorable mention on the All-Pac-10 team and a second-team All-Academic selection.
Ryan Pauling of Cheney will receive a Senior Athlete Award for track and field when Pacific Lutheran University honors its student-athletes at a dessert May 2.
Stacey Scriven of Spokane (Lewis and Clark), a sophomore at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., has qualified for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award in synchronized swimming.
Doug Clark from Cheney High School is a pitcher for the Northwest Missouri State baseball team. He has a 3-4 record with a 4.63 earned run average with four complete games and one shutout.
Golf
University of Idaho football coach Chris Tormey and his staff will head the field for the fifth annual golf tourament that bears his name Saturday at the UI Golf Course.
The tournament, held in conjunction with UI’s annual Silver & Gold spring football scrimmage Friday night at 7 in the Kibbie Dome, will begin with a shotgun start at noon. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Cost before Friday is $75; $85 after. Besides greens fees, it buys you lunch and dinner.

Hockey
Members of Spokane’s growing women’s hockey organization will be in action the next two weekends at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
This coming Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Spokane Storm will take on members of the Over-60 Spokane Flyers in the annual benefit for the Spokane Food Bank. Admission is one or more cans of food.
Old-timers players are expected to include former senior players Carl Cirullo, Charlie Goodwin, Tom Rendall and Don Wallis.
May 7-9, the three Spokane teams - Thunder (girls), Fire & Ice (beginning women) and Storm (intermediate women) will play host to the second annual Female Hockey Weekend at Eagles. Games are 6:15-11:15 p.m May 7, 7:45 a.m.-9:30 p.m. May 8 and 7 a.m.-1:45 p.m. May 9. Admission is free.
Teams from Montana, Washington and Canada are expected.
