Boxing deserves more

It seems that these days the only time there is a front-page sports story for boxing is if it is something negative about the participants of this great sport. Some examples would be Mike Tyson’s infamous bite fight, Lennox Lewis getting jobbed by the judges, or more recently Fernando Vargas getting arrested on criminal charges.

This is a real shame because these stories take away the positive attention generated by fighters like Erik Morales, Ricardo Lopez, and even Fernando Vargas. Fighters like them have time and again proved themselves to be great warriors and athletes. But they are lucky if they get a two-paragraph mention in the sports section.

Fight fans like myself and many of my friends do not get to see every advertised fight on TV or otherwise. This leaves the newspaper as one of our only resources for the results. However, the results of fights are hardly ever announced in the sports page.

Boxing is a great sport that has been around a long time and it deserves more respect from the media than it receives. Randy Bowen Wellpinit

Baseball’s the villain

I read with great interest commissioner Bud Selig’s proclamation that he would never approve Pete Rose’s entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame because of Rose’s gambling. I can certainly understand Selig’s aversion to gambling, since he oversees a group of owners who have reduced gambling and investing to a bare minimum - really to zero.

These men of great vision have managed to dip their dirty hands into the pockets of the taxpayer in order to finance huge stadiums. Worse, they have managed to shift the majority of the costs of minor league expenses to, of all people, college students via student activities cards.

I refer to the owners paying the cost of college baseball coaches in early 1970 and encouraging the expansion of college baseball seasons from approximately 20 to upward of 80 games per year. Please forgive me if I doubt if college students can participate in 80 games per year and travel from school to school and still receive an education.

The ”robber barons” continue to rape the public with impunity. Dean Kronberger Spokane
