Cougars Spikers Dig In
Washington State University will conduct a volleyball scrimmage Saturday at Beasley Coliseum.
The scrimmage begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Fans are asked to use the tunnel entrance at Beasley Coliseum.
This will be the first time the volleyball team will play on its home court, a SportCourt, in Beasley. The Cougars have been practicing in another gym since Aug. 11.
Coach Cindy Fredrick and her staff have been working with a team comprised of five returning letterwinners, one transfer and seven freshmen.
The sole senior, Joy Sperry (Wallace, Idaho), returns for her second season and is joined by sophomores Missy Blackshire (Spokane), Kristen Johnson (Olympia), Kerry Lewis (West Linn, Ore.), and Stacey Miller (Bellingham).
Trina Kighlinger, a 6-1 outside hitter from Yorba Linda, Calif., has joined the Cougars after two seasons at Loyola Marymount University.
The 1999 freshmen are Adrian Hankoff (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.), Holly Harris (Sandy, Utah), LaToya Harris (Portland), Kortney Jamtaas (Orinda, Calif.), Jamie Orth (Seattle) Chelsie Schafer (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Melissa Wright (Muncie, Ind.).
Schafer is playing with the Canadian Junior National team in preparation for the World Junior Championships, Aug. 28-Sept. 5, in her hometown.
The University of Idaho, which will conduct its intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at 3 p.m. in Memorial Gym, has been picked by league coaches to finish second - behind Nevada - in this year’s Eastern Division race in the Big West Conference.
The Vandals, who finished 15-14 overall and 8-8 in the Big West last year, received one first-place vote to Nevada’s eight. The coaches picked Pacific to win the Western Division title.
College football
Idaho, which opens its season Thursday evening against Eastern Washington at Albi Stadium, will conduct its final preseason scrimmage this afternoon at 3:30 next to the Kibbie Dome.
Golf
The Vandal Floating Green Golf Scramble, hosted by the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Casino, will be held Friday at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.
Tee time is 8 a.m. for the five-person scramble. Cost is $175 person, which includes lunch.

Indian Canyon assistant Dave Christenson fired a final round of 2-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for eighth in the Wilson Pacific Northwest PGA Section Championship a Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore.
Jeff Coston, a teaching pro at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Blaine, Wash., won the title by beating Illahe’s Ron Rawls in the third hole of sudden death. Coston and Rawls finished 54 holes at 7-under 209.
SOCCER Northwest cup nears The Northwest Cup Soccer Tournament will be held at the Spokane Polo Club Friday through Sunday with 2,200 players on 122 teams taking part, including 51 teams from Spokane. Age groups include U11 to U19. Games take place from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s playoff games running through 4 p.m. The polo club fields are located just off I-90, near the airport on Highway 2 in Airway Heights.
