Jail’S Population Drops Below 200
Population at the Kootenai County Jail settled back below 200 on Wednesday after reaching record highs for the number of inmates and initial court appearances.
The jail population was 219 on Sunday morning, topping the facility’s population record set last October, said Capt. Travis Chaney, the jail commander.
Of the inmates who were arrested over the three-day Presidents Day weekend, 38 could not post bail and made first appearances Tuesday morning - another all-time high.
Deputies were supervising 192 inmates being held Wednesday at the jail, Chaney said.
Built in 1987 to house 95 inmates, storage and office space in the jail has been converted, increasing capacity to 127.
