No Cause Found For Plane Crash

Federal investigators searching for the cause of a fiery plane crash last year along Alpine Lake have found no evidence of mechanical failure.

Although severe fire damage to the Lancair IV experimental plane has limited the investigation, inspection of the engine, landing gear and other parts of the plane showed no unusual wear, according to the National Transportation and Safety Board.

The plane nose-dived into an unoccupied home along the shores of Alpine Lake during a heavy snowstorm, killing both men on board on Feb. 26, 1998. A cause of the crash has not been determined.

A finding of fact released by the NTSB says the manufacturer of the kit the plane was built from warns against problems with the plane’s ability to fly in icing conditions.
