James Dyck Sr. Cheney

Memorial service for James R. Dyck Sr., 76, will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 23 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dyck, who was born in Omaha, Neb., died Monday.

He graduated from high school in Jefferson City, Mo., and attended junior college for two years.

Mr. Dyck served with the Navy Air Corps during World War II as a pilot on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.

After the war he played professional baseball for 20 years with the St. Louis Browns, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds.

He retired from baseball in 1960 and moved to Cheney, where he had owned and operated the Cheney Bowl for the past 39 years.

Mr. Dyck was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was recently inducted into the Spokane Bowling Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Charlotte; a son, James Dyck Jr. of Cheney; a daughter, Jamey Parker of Simi Valley, Calif.; a brother, Arthur Dyck of Sun City West, Ariz.; and two grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Jack Smith Mary Smith Post Falls

Service for Jack Cornelius Smith, 69, and Mary Marie Smith, 65, will be held later. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Texarkana, Ark., died Friday.

Mrs. Smith, who was born in Old Potter, Ark., died Sunday.

The Smiths were married in Arkansas on June 17, 1952, and moved to Post Falls in 1956.

Mr. Smith worked at Inland Paper Co. for 21 years and worked for the city of Post Falls Maintenance and Water Department and the Street Department before retiring in 1991.

He also worked for Post Falls Animal Control and was a police officer. He was a member of the Post Falls Volunteer Fire Department, Post Falls Emergency Medical Technicians and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Smith served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mrs. Smith worked at Clare Pendar and then at Key Tronic Corp., where she retired as an assembly worker in 1987.

She was a member of the Post Falls Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary.

Survivors their son, Dan Smith of Spirit Lake, Idaho; a daughter, Rose Carr of Kellogg; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Mr. Smith also is survived by a sister, Eva Ford of Otis Orchards.

Mrs. Smith also is survived by two sisters, Annie Carrigan of Pennsylvania and Wanda Holt of Oklahoma.

Idella Copenhaver Creston, Wash.

Private inurnment for Idella F. Copenhaver, 24, will be at Wilbur (Wash.) Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Copenhaver, who was born in Davenport, Wash., died Saturday.

Survivors include her parents, Don and Carol Copenhaver of Creston; three sisters, Merilla Hopkins of Davenport, and Belle Petty and AnnaMae Rohde, both of Creston; and her grandmother, Belle VanBuren of Creston.

Herbert Williams Spokane

Memorial service for Herbert M. Williams, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Edwall (Wash.) Christian Heritage School. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Williams, who was born in Stockett, Mont., died Sunday.

He moved to Tyler, Wash., in 1919 and graduated from Edwall High School in 1930.

In 1934 he married Rhoda Green and farmed in the Edwall area for many years.

Mr. Williams was a Boy Scout and 4-H leader. He was a member of the Edwall Methodist Church, Edwall Lions Club and Edwall Grain Growers. He was a 50-year member of the Waukon Grange, where he also served as master for several years.

He moved to Spokane 11 years ago.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Williams of Spokane, Huw Williams of Edwall and Joe Williams of Ilwaco, Wash.; two daughters, Janet Cruz of Kamiah, Idaho, and Rebecca Teeters of Kent, Wash.; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

F. Raymond Young Spokane

Funeral for F. Raymond Young, 88, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hysham, Mont. Beals Mortuary Chapel in Forsythe, Mont., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Young, who was born near Belfield, N.D., died Thursday.

He married Delores Zent in 1941, and they settled in Miles City, Mont.

Mr. Young owned a grocery business in Miles City and farmed in Kinsey, Mont., until 1961, when he moved to Billings, Mont., where farmed near Hysham.

He moved to Spokane in 1982.

Mr. Young was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus in Montana. He was also a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Kiwanis Club and the Southside Newcomers Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cathy Hopkins of Spokane; a son, Mike Young of Great Falls, Mont.; a sister, Virginia Angle of Billings; and six grandchildren.

Marcos Escure Troy, Mont.

Visitation for Marcos Escure, formerly of the Lamont and Sprague, Wash., area, will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Thursday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 am. Friday at Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Sprague, Wash. Burial will follow at the Macabee Cemetery in Sprague.

Mr. Escure, who was born in Jaurrieta, Spain, died Monday. He was 94.

He came to New York City in 1920 and moved to Yakima, where he worked in the sheep business.

In 1940 he became the co-owner of the Escure Sheep Co. and purchased a farm in Lamont, Wash.

In 1954 he sold the sheep and turned the farm into a cattle ranch. He married Ethel Crandall in 1957. She died in 1968.

Mr. Escure married Maria Orth in 1978, and they moved to Troy, Mont., in 1980. She died in 1994.

He was a member of Mary Queen Catholic Church in Sprague, Wool Growers Association and the Washington Cattlemen’s Association.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Karoline Cole of Troy and Lore Lumpp of Germany.

Lucille Feazelle St. Maries

Service for Lucille D. Feazelle, 85, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Private burial will follow the service.

Mrs. Feazelle, who was born in Jefferson City, Mo., died Sunday.

She grew up in Tum Tum, Wash., and in 1935 moved to St. Maries, where she worked on a dairy farm.

She married George Feazelle in St. Maries on May 10, 1936, and worked as a cook for the Forest Service camps in the Calder, Idaho, area.

Mrs. Feazelle later worked as a cook for Jack Dittman Logging before retiring in 1970.

She traveled to Texas frequently. She was a member of the Benewah County Senior Citizens and the St. Maries Birthday Club.

Mrs. Feazelle was a former member of the St. Maries Eagles Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1975.

Survivors include two daughters, Fran Reid and Terry Ryle, both of St. Maries; a brother, Archie Evans of California; two sisters, Georgia Watkins and Patricia Barry, both of Spokane; and five grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Donald Manning Newman Lake

Funeral for Donald R. Manning, 69, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Trentwood. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Manning, who was born in Sioux City, Iowa, died Sunday.

He grew up in California and in 1950 married Patricia Randolph.

Mr. Manning owned Don’s Sun Valley Dairy in Linda Mar, Calif., for 10 years. He sponsored several Little League baseball, youth and adult bowling teams and men’s softball teams in the Pacifica, Calif., area.

He later worked in the district office for the Laguna Salada School District in Vallemar, Calif., for four years. He retired in 1984 and moved to Newman Lake.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Patricia; two daughters, Dona Fasano and Denis Kapuniai, both of Newman Lake; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Elaine (Eddy) Lasswell Pullman

Private service will be held for Elaine Frances (Eddy) Lasswell, 80. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lasswell, who was born in Indianapolis, died Friday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Omaha, Neb., and attended Peru (Neb.) State Teachers College for two years.

She moved to Pullman in 1947 and married Richard Lasswell in 1950.

Mrs. Lasswell worked as a librarian at the Neill public Library for 18 years before retiring in 1982.

She was a member of The Painters.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, R. Scott Lasswell of Pullman and Phillip Lasswell of Cheney; and two sisters, Shirley Cramer of Sun City, Ariz., and Jacquelin Jordan of Omaha.

Laura Huesman Davenport, Wash.

Memorial service for Laura R. Huesman, 102, will be held at a later date. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

A 25-year resident of Davenport, Mrs. Huesman died Saturday.

She was born in Tacoma and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Don Cline of Davenport; and three grandsons.

Josephine Allen Spokane

Funeral Mass for Josephine Allen, 85, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Allen, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1931 and ran a small neighborhood grocery store on Boone Avenue for 55 years.

Miss Allen was a lifetime member of Mary Queen Catholic Church and the St. Monica Guild and the Altar Society.

Survivors include two sisters, Genevieve Arneson and Lily Gregory, both of Spokane; and a brother, Charles Allen of Dalton Gardens, Idaho.

Catherine Wolff Gary Wolff Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Catherine Alana Wolff, 36, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kootenai County Baptist Church in Post Falls.

Mrs. Wolff, who was born in Barstow, Calif., died last Wednesday from complications while giving birth to her stillborn son, Gary Micheal Wolff.

She graduated from high school in Medical Lake and she married Duane Wolff on Jan. 30, 1994, in Post Falls before moving to Hayden.

Survivors include her husband; two children, Micheal and Gina M. Wolff, both at home; her parents, Edwin “Jack” and Joan Allen, of Florida; a brother, Michael Allen of Seattle; and a sister, Pam of Florida.

Survivors of the infant include grandparents Frank and Katie Wolff of Texas.

Virginia James Spokane

Funeral for Virginia C. “Jenny” James, 73, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 28-year Spokane resident, Mrs. James died Sunday.

Born in Wichita, Kan., Mrs. James was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Lee Roy; a son, Robert James of Spokane; a daughter, Vicki St. John of Star, Idaho; a brother, Paul Wesley of Winfield, Kan.; a sister, Dolly McCarty of Clearfield, Utah; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Earl Dalquist Spokane

No service will be held for Earl E. Dalquist, 84. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dalquist, who was born in Lakota, N.D., died Sunday.

He attended grade school in Saco, Mont., and in 1927 moved to Spokane.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1931 and from Eastern Washington University in 1936.

He served as an officer with the Navy during World War II.

He was a high school teacher in Springdale, Wash., the Spokane Valley, Latah and Riverside for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Laurel; and a brother, Duwain Dalquist of Spokane.

Gertrud Feld Spokane

Memorial service for Gertrud E. Feld, 98, will be held at a later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 70-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Feld died Friday.

She was born in Leipsig, Germany. and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Walter, died in 1963.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson of San Jose, Calif.
