BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

Benewah Community Hospital has reported a 25 percent increase in revenue since the start of its fiscal year in October. Total revenue for the first four months of the fiscal year was $2.82 million, with $2.86 million in expenses.

BONNER COUNTY Priest River

The Priest River Museum Board of Directors held its first meeting Feb. 11. Fund-raisers planned by the board include an Appraisal Fair in May, an expanded Timber Day Auction and a Mystery Dinner in September. In addition to fund-raising, the board decided to hold a training for museum volunteers and hang a memorial plaque in the main hall inscribed with names of people who worked to make the museum a reality.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

Boundary Community Hospital is offering Certified Nursing Aid classes beginning March 16. Class cost is $450, and financial assistance is available through the Job Service. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For information, call (208) 267-3141.

KOOTENAI COUNTY Post Falls

The City of Post Falls recently received a $3,700 National Tree Trust Grant for education and training related to community forestry. The grant will be used to complete projects including park resource mapping and street and park tree inventory. Urban Forester Nolan Philips, who applied for the grant in October 1998, plans to hold three educational workshops this summer through the grant.

LATAH COUNTY Troy

The Troy City Council has approved an August bond election for residents on the Main Street project. The project includes upgrades to Main Street’s water and sewer lines, and sludge disposal for the city’s waste water treatment plant. The council also approved a Community Development Block Grant and two local-improvement districts at the Feb. 24 meeting.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Silver Valley

Kellogg, Mullan and Wallace School Districts are implementing policies to help combat the use of drugs and alcohol among students. Specialist Elaine Eberharter-Maki submitted the policy to the districts. Mullan School District is working to implement the policy, which allows trained personnel to intervene in cases where students are suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol on school property. Wallace School District adopted a similar plan in 1996, and Kellogg adopted a plan in 1998.

WASHINGTON

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

The Crisis Network is one step closer to opening a transition home for the homeless and domestic violence victims. The group recently received a $20,000 grant from Federal Home Loan Bank to purchase a duplex. The twin three-bedroom apartments will be renovated for low-income families in crisis situations. The home should be operational by August.

SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park

Navy Lt. Janine Hodgson-Wood recently received a commendation medal for an End of Tour Award while stationed at the Naval Ambulatory Care Center at the Groton Submarine Base in Connecticut. Hodgson-Wood is the daughter of former Deer Park residents Dave Hodgson and Donna Norris and the granddaughter of John and Rose Hodgson of Deer Park.

WHITMAN COUNTY Garfield, Palouse

Top students at Garfield-Palouse High School were recently named. In the senior class, a single student earned perfect scores. Lea Anne Hegg earned a 4.0 grade-point average to top her class. In the junior class, competition is stiff. Alexa Broughton, Katie Coles, Kenon Kildew, Eric Slonaker and Tasha Swinney all earned straight-A’s.

MONTANA

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commissioner Charlie Decker will meet with the public Thursday at the Libby City Hall complex. The meeting will provide information on the proposed conservation easement agreement between Plum Creek and FWP for land in the Fisher and Thompson river valleys. Representatives of Plum Creek and FWP will also attend the meeting. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. For information, contact Decker at (208) 293-6465.
