Spring Training: Mariners’ Day

M’s 12, Brewers 4

Home runs by David Bell, Russ Davis and John Mabry and solid pitching led the Seattle Mariners to a 12-4 rout of Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale, Ariz.

Quote of the day

From pitching coach Stan Williams, to third baseman Russ Davis: “Did you know I was baseball’s first million dollar player? I made $50,000 a year for 20 years.”

Camp notes, Freddy Garcia

Before rookie Freddy Garcia got his start Sunday, manager Lou Piniella took him aside.

“I told him he was my No. 3 starting pitcher and to just go out and have fun,” Piniella said.

“He didn’t say much, but when he walked out in the clubhouse had his shoulders up a bit. Basically, I wanted to see how he handled it today on the mound. It’s one thing to pitch when you’re trying to make an impression - let’s see how you do when you’ve got the job.”

How did it work? Garcia pitched 4-2/3 innings and gave up three runs, but also doubled home a run.
