Dixie Takes A Pair From Nic

Lacee Johnson pitched a four-hitter and Dixie College defeated North Idaho College 2-1 Friday to complete a sweep in Scenic West Athletic Conference softball at St. George, Utah.

Neesha Kunz’s two-out single in the seventh inning drove in the winner as the Rebels won the opener 4-3.

Angie Tweedy of NIC (16-23) hit a two-run home run in the opener for a 3-1 lead in the sixth. NIC left two runners on in the sixth inning of the second game.

Baseball

Chris Kahl hit a two-out, solo home run in the ninth to lift San Diego (26-20, 11-11) to an 11-10 win over visiting Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference.

The Bulldogs (23-17-1, 11-9) tied the game in the eighth by scoring twice, on an error and wild pitch. Bo Hart, Adam Stokey and Barry Matthews were all 3 for 5 for the Zags, combining for six RBIs.

The Toreros’ Greg Sain was 4 for 4 with six RBIs, including a grand slam in the first. Kahl also homered in the first.

Track and field

Whitworth’s April Gallagher won the women’s discus at the Northwest Conference championships at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.

Gallagher, out of Mead High, threw the discus 125 feet, 3 inches for a cushion of 4 feet, 2 inches over Linfield’s Lindsay Holbrook.

Other Pirates women in the top five were: Jamie Wakefield, long jump, third, 16-8; Elysia Hanna, hammer, fourth, 136-6; and Annie Scott, 3,000-meter run, fifth, 10 minutes, 33.94 seconds.

Frank Moore, in the discus, and Takashi Atkins, hammer, both placed fifth for Whitworth’s men. Moore threw 142-5, Atkins 137-10.

Volleyball

Washington State volleyball coach Cindy Fredrick announced Colleen Smith and Alicia Erickson have decided to leave the team.

Smith, a 6-foot-6 sophomore middle blocker from Albuquerque was a part-time starter who averaged 2.25 kills and 0.76 blocks per game.

“Colleen wants to be closer to home. We don’t have exactly what she wants for her major so she elected to transfer,” Fredrick said. “It was totally Colleen’s choice.”

Erickson, a 6-4 freshman outside/ middle hitter from Henderson, Nev., was a reserve player who averaged 1.43 kills and 1.24 blocks per game.
