‘Trippin’ Trips All Over Itself

In “Trippin’,” the characters are an African-American family that lives in suburban Los Angeles. They’re an argumentative, rowdy bunch, and their humor is a bit too obviously influenced by the Eddie Murphy family in “The Nutty Professor,” but it’s clear these people love each other and want the best for each other.

Chief among them is the economically named G (short for Greg), a high-school senior whose parents want him to get off his butt and fill out his college applications.

We like G, too, so it’s a drag when the movie hauls him into a series of stupid fantasy scenes, most of which involve topless girls and untold wealth and one of which involves Naomi Campbell showing up to advise G:

“Everyone makes mistakes. What really matters is what you do after the mistakes.” Sage words from a wise supermodel.

In these scenes, “Trippin’s” tone veers all over the place, encompassing family drama, romantic comedy, raucous farce, even violent, shoot-‘em-up carnage.

These fantasies pad out a slim story (basically, it’s “Will G get the girl?”) and they turn what started out as a parody of black stereotypes into one long parade of them.
