Cda Trips Rival For Title

Coeur d’Alene and Lake City dueled all spring as cross-town rivals eager to win the State A-1 softball championship.

They split four regular-season games with Lake City capturing the Inland Empire League title and Coeur d’Alene rebounding to claim the regional championship.

Saturday, at Quad Park in Post Falls, they settled the issue for good. CdA edged Lake City 3-2 to defend the state championship the Vikings won a year ago.

With Lake City’s Timberwolves leading 2-1, CdA tied the score on Patti Stranger’s single in the third inning. Moments later, Stranger scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by winning pitcher Blake Hoorelbeke.

Coeur d’Alene finished the season with a 25-4 record. Hoorelbeke went 20-3. Lake City wound up 24-8.

Lakeland, second a year ago, had to settle for third place in the State A-2 tournament at Post Falls.

Lakeland, which has earned a trophy in four consecutive state tournaments, finished the season 20-5.
