Jerry and Pat Lewis were recently named “1999 Idaho State Tree Farmers of the Year” by the American Tree Farm System. Both have multiple harvest operations, numerous planting projects and a road to the top of their property and a for maintenance, said Mike Wolcott, of Inland Forest Management.

Boundary County commissioners are seeking to fill a vacant seat on the Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission. This commission meets the third Thursday of the month to decide on various land use and planning issues. Those interested must have lived in Boundary County for a minimum of two years and submit a letter of interest to the zoning administrator at P.O. The second annual Oktoberfest will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Gateway Marina. Events include live music, a potluck dinner and canned goods drive for the Harrison Food Bank. 28.

Eight candidates are running for three open City Council positions. The candidates are Aaron Ament, Michael Curley, Jack Hill, Evan Holmes, Allen Thol, Michael Thomason, Travis Tonn and Steve Busch, who is running for re-election. Council members Pam Palmer and Tom LeClaire are not running again.

The Silver Valley Career Mentoring Partnership is looking for professional adults who would like to mentor a student for a few hours a month during the school year. Activities such as job shadowing, attending planned workshops and attending student activities would be arranged.

The SVCMP goals are to promote positive adult/student relationships, develop problem solving skills, overcome obstacles, explore career options and set goals, develop interpersonal skills, improve academic performance and see the connection between work and school. Libby Public Schools’ enrollment is down for the first time in six years. The official September count of 1,910 is down 19 from June. The district is worried about state funding which is based on enrollment from October and February.

Wynne Scherf, a senior at Selkirk High School, was named a National Finalist for a Samsung American Legion Scholarship. Ten of the $20,000 scholarships will be given nationwide. She also was awarded the President’s Student Service Challenge Program Scholarship.

As of last week, 24,000 acres had been permitted for fall burning. Acreage is expected to double as thirty more permits are in progress.
