The Cougars took the opening kickoff and went straight down the field thanks to in large part to 27 penalty yards on the Sun Devils. Twelve of those yards came on a third-and-4 at the ASU 23 on a roughing-the-passer penalty after Steve Birnbaum had thrown an incomplete pass.
