Charlyn Johnson New Phi Eta Sigma Member

Charlyn Johnson was recently initiated into the University of Washington Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. She was also nominated for membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the honor society for high-achieving first- and second-year students. The induction ceremony will be on campus in the fall.

Johnson is the daughter of Lynn and Sherry Johnson, Spokane, and is a 1999 graduate of East Valley High School.

Three Eastern Washington University students from Spokane have been selected to receive the Edmund J. Yarwood Dean’s Honor Student Award. This award is given to graduating seniors who have achieved academic excellence and demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities to Eastern and the community.

Whitney Hooper and Michelle Krupp, both graduates of Shadle Park High School, and Stephanie Etter, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School are the recepients.

Hooper graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English-Literary Studies and Krupp received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

Etter graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and plans to return to Eastern and earn her master’s degree in French after traveling for a year.

The Deaconess Medical Center Auxiliary has awarded $1,000 scholarships to the following DMC hospital employees wishing to further their medical education:

Angela Croston is employed in the Deaconess Pediatrics Unit. She attends the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education to earn her nursing degree.

Bethany Maughan attends Spokane Community College and will graduate in June 2001 with a two-year nursing degree. She works in the Deaconess Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Penny Sczenski works nights in the Deaconess Intensive Care Unit. She is attends Spokane Community College to obtain her two-year nursing degree.

David Smith is taking prerequisites for his two-year Registered Nurse training at Spokane Community College. He is employed in the Deaconess Short-Stay Unit.

Mavis Wallace attends Spokane Community College and plans to obtain her two-year nursing degree. She has worked at Deaconess as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for 11 years.

James “Bert” Hand, a student in the Mary Walker School District, Springdale, Wash., was selected from thousands of students across the United States to tour with “The Sound of America Honor Band.” This national honor band and choir performs throughout Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France and Luxembourg.
