Kerns Leads Potlatch By Lakeside
Rob Kerns threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another Friday night to lead the Potlatch High Loggers to a 32-18 victory over the visiting Lakeside Knights of Plummer in non-league football action.
Leonard Johnson ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Justin Hendrickx rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown for Lakeside. The Knights finished with 345 yards on the ground.
Kerns had touchdown passes of 60, 5, 12 and 10 yards and ran 37 yards for the game’s final score. Jamie Farley caught a pair of touchdowns for the Loggers, who finished with 284 total yards through the air.
Women’s soccer
The University of Montana scored just 3 minutes into the 2000 season opener as the Grizzlies defeated Gonzaga University 2-0 at South Campus Field in Missoula.
Heather Olson scored the first goal of the season at the 3:01 mark on a pass from Liz Roberts that split the Bulldogs defense. Montana would hold onto that lead heading into halftime despite only out-shooting Gonzaga by an 8-6 margin.
The Grizzlies capitalized early in the second period for their final goal of the contest. Amy Wronski drove home a ball after Heather Olson missed on a long shot off the crossbar at the 47:24 mark, giving Montana the two-goal advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Tara Curtis looked good in net for the Bulldogs turning away seven shots in her first collegiate start. Montana received a stellar performance in goal by senior keeper Natalie Hiller. She turned away four GU shots on goal to record the shutout, the sixth of her career.
The Bulldogs are back in action Friday when they host Portland at 2 p.m.
