Outgoing Kootenai County Treasurer Jeannine Ashcraft wants to remind residents that they have until Dec. 20 to pay the first half of their 2000 taxes.

Ashcraft also recommends that residents bring payments into the office - at 451 Government Way - before Dec. 20 to avoid hourlong waits.

Anyone who waits to pay taxes until after Dec. 20 will face a 2percent penalty and a 1percent penalty per month in interest from Jan. 2001 until payment is made.

Residents who mail in their payments should mail early. Envelopes must be postmarked no later than Dec. 20.

Residents who have not received 2000 tax notices should call the treasurer’s office to request them. A large number of notices apparently were lost in the mail. Anyone with questions can call (208) 666-8146.
