Chief Deputy County Treasurer Appointed

Newly appointed Kootenai County Treasurer Tom Malzahn selected a replacement Monday to succeed him in his former job as chief deputy treasurer.

Laurie Thomas of Coeur d’Alene will serve as chief deputy treasurer under Malzahn, who will take office officially on Feb. 2.

Kootenai County commissioners chose Malzahn to replace Jeannine Ashcraft, who is resigning effective Feb. 1.

Thomas has been working as regional assistant to U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, for the past six years. Prior to that, she had been Craig’s staff assistant.

Malzahn said Thomas’ main job will be more customer-service-oriented rather than number-crunching. However, Thomas has banking experience, including working with mortgages and closing loans, Malzahn said.
