Alpine skiing/snowboarding

Night skiing begins tonight at Schweitzer and will run every Friday and Saturday through March 17. This time of year, night skiing is offered every night through Dec. 31. The cost is $10 for all and free with season passes.

Freeride Institute is coming to Schweitzer on Dec. 28-31. This is a great opportunity for skiers and snowboarders to learn the fundamentals of riding the pipe, launching huge air or ripping the steeps with professional coaches Bob Legasa, Jeff Yates and Teague Mullen, among others.

World extreme skiing champion Chris Davenport will be at Schweitzer to ride and ski with the participants. The cost is $350 which includes instruction, on-hill video analysis, prizes, parties and on-staff pro photographer. The clinic is open to those 10 years old and up with intermediate-advanced ability. The Mt. Spokane Ski School is offering an adults-only, beginners program for first-time skiers or snowboarders. The first session runs Dec. 26-29. Call 238-2220 ext. 215 for more information.

Night skiing begins at Mt. Spokane on Wednesday.

Santa will stop in at 49 Degrees North on Saturday and Sunday. Christmas hours are 10 a.m - 3:30 p.m.

Santa will make his yearly visit to Big Mountain Ski Resort at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

To make room for Santa, there will be no night skiing on Christmas Eve. Night skiing will continue from Dec. 25 through Dec. 31. Night skiing tickets are $12 or free to Big Mountain day-ticket or season-pass holders. Chair 2 will open for night skiing as conditions permit.

Silver Mountain and Lookout Mountain are open every day through Jan 1. Lookout’s Claim Jumper terrain park is open with nine launches and an 1,111-foot long quarter pipe.

Nordic skiing

Skate and classic lanes are down at Downriver Golf Course. Skate and classic lanes also are down at Riverside State Park from the Bowl and Pitcher overlook to Seven Mile on the Centennial trail. For updates, call 625-6200.

The Nordic Ski Center at Priest Lake opens for the season Tuesday and will be open every day through Jan. 1. Following the holidays, the center will be open Friday-Sunday and major holidays from 9 a.m. to dusk. (Fridays are being added this season.)

The daily trail fee is $5. Children 5 and under ski free. Season passes also are available.

This year, the golf course is being expanded, as is the trail system. They’ll also be connector trails for skiing and snowshoeing over to Luby Bay.

Lessons, warm lodge, homemade soups, drinks and hot beverages are available.
