Ev’S A Hit In Arena Debut

It was a good night to be a Knight. East Valley, making its first appearance in the Arena, scorched Mead 80-47 Tuesday night.

The Knights, playoff-bound in their first year in the Greater Spokane League, knocked down seven 3-pointers and scored 80 points for the fourth time in 17 games.

“I think we were pretty pumped up for this game,” EV standout Andrew Burgess said. “The coach was telling us that people have a hard time shooting here because there is no background behind the baskets. It looks like we adjusted pretty well.”

And quickly.

East Valley raced to a 21-10 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 41-17 at the half. The Knights hit three 3-pokinters in each quarter.

“I was just curious how we’d do,” said Knights coach Drew Vanderpool, who had Arena experience with the Rogers girls team before taking the EV job last year. “It was one of those things we considered. We have been playing well and that’s one of those things in the back of your mind. We changed our warmups. Instead of doing layups, we shot jump shots.”

Burgess had three 3s and 22 points, and Jason Paul added 17 points. The Knights hit 7 of 13 3s and 22 of 39 2s for a 29-52 night. Chris Fischer was the only Panther in double figures with 17.

Ferris 70, Central Valley 51

The game was decided quickly as the sixth-ranked Saxons’ defense put the Bears in hibernation. By halftime, CV was 7 of 34 from the field and trailed 38-17. Meanwhile, Ferris was 13 of 25. The Bears’ final percentage was 36 (21-58) and Ferris was 28-55. Sean Mallon led the Saxons with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Jacob Pounds had 16 points as four players scored in double figures.

Kyle Boast led CV with 16.

Gonzaga Prep 58, Lewis and Clark 45

The fourth-ranked Bullpups hit 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Tigers, who got within four with 1 minute to play at LC.

Four Bullpups scored in double figures but LC’s Erik Coleman was the top scorer with 16 and Jonathan Hook had five steals.

The Highlanders took advantage of 12 turnovers in the second quarter to blitz the Pirates at Rogers. It was Shadle Park’s 10th straight victory.

Demetrius Scott had two 3s in the second as the Highlanders capitalized. Shaun Rowe had eight of his career-high 20 points in the third quarter, including two huge slams and the Highlanders put five players in double figures.
