Scherf Ices Key Victory For Selkirk

A/B girls tournaments

The Selkirk Rangers’ motto on Friday night was, “Just Wynne, baby.”

Wynne Scherf made all eight of her second-half free throws and visiting Selkirk defeated Republic 46-40 in a winner-to-district game of the Panorama League tournament.

Scherf, who surpassed 800 career points on the night, and Rachea Allert had steals in the final minute to preserve the win. Selkirk hit 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Republic defeated Selkirk 41-34 during the regular season.

In Friday’s other games, St. George’s qualified for district by defeating Northwest Christian; Springdale eliminated Columbia; and Wellpinit ousted Inchelium.

Selkirk will play St. George’s on Friday night at Colville for the top two seeds to the District 7 B tournament. In Monday’s winner-to-district games, Republic will host Wellpinit and Springdale will play at NWC.

Alyssa Henley scored 14 of her 25 in the first half, and finished 10 of 14 from the field to lead the top-ranked Dragons over the visiting Crusaders.

The Dragons’ Julie Witherspoon scored 12 in the first half and finished 8 of 12 from the field. Wenchi Liu and Abbey Blume combined for 14 of St. George’s assists.

Rae Adolph scored 15 of her 27 in the fourth quarter, rallying the visiting Chargers over the Lions at Hunters.

Adolph hit four of her five 3-pointers in the second half. Springdale won the regular-season game by 24 points.

Lucinda Mack had seven rebounds and Leslie Fredrickson added six assists as the third-seeded Bulldogs upset the No. 2 Scotties in an opener at Mead High.

Freeman had just eight field goals. The Scotties were 2-0 vs. Kettle Falls during the regular season.

Kettle Falls plays league champion Colfax at 5:30 tonight for a spot in the championship round. Freeman plays Liberty at 2 in a loser-out game.

Mandy McCann totaled 16 points and 14 rebounds, and the Panthers eliminated the Spartans despite shooting just 21 percent from the floor.

Asotin hit 17 of 32 from the line, and the Panthers’ Kim Walburn, Tiffani King and McCann combined for 13 steals. Jenny Dale and Jennifer York had seven rebounds apiece for the Spartans, who shot 17 percent from the field.
