Second Boat Added For Slide-Area Families

The Cape Horn ferry system, established to aid families stranded by a rock slide on Cape Horn Road, has another boat in its fleet.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary brought a boat out of dry dock Saturday to assist the Timberlake Fire District in ferrying residents around the slide.

A large rock slide Friday was the second in two weeks to close the road, isolating about 75 families. Friday’s slide was bigger than the first, and prospects for opening the road are uncertain.

“You’ve got a mile and a half of mountain up there,” said Timberlake Fire Commissioner Wayne Rubright. “Who knows how much is going to be coming down.”

Residents can only reach their homes by boat, and Timberlake Fire District volunteers are operating a boat for that purpose. The boat ride takes nearly an hour round-trip between the public boat docks in Bayview and the Cape Horn Marina.

Officials will take the boat to Cape Horn Marina for a public meeting at 2 p.m. today. Residents needing a ride can call the Timberlake Fire command post at 683-1916.
