Benewah County St.Maries
Loggers may learn more about forestry during a three-day accredited course “Loggers Education to Advance Professionalism” in St. Maries March 22-24 and Fernwood March 29-31. The course includes information on silviculture and water quality and is taught by instructors from the University of Idaho and the Idaho Department of Lands. Registration is $75; deadline is March 17. Call 245-2422.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The Idaho Fish and Game Department recently announced fishing limit changes for Lake Pend Oreille and the Clark Fork River. Catching kokanee is banned due to an all-time record low count. The maximum harvest of rainbow (four a person) and cutthroat trout (two a person) was increased because they’re the kokanee’s worst predator. The season remains open all year.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The City Council approved $500 for the Youth Crisis Line. The crisis line provides help for youths and adults in abusive situations. The program is funded through grants that must be matched by community donations. The city police and the county sheriff’s office also support the program.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
During a recent election, Cathy Kendrick was elected to, and Marc Wallace retained his position, on the Kootenai Hospital District board of trustees. The low turnout of voters (749) was blamed on bad weather. Wallace received 411 votes and Kendrick received 311. Trustees are seated for a six-year term.
Latah County Moscow
Bids from construction companies have not matched funds raised by local skating enthusiasts for Moscow’s proposed skate park until recently. Skaters have raised $90,500 in the last several years. Kenaston Corp.’s bid of $89,722 will be recommended by the parks department to the City Council after a final review. If the bid is accepted, construction could begin this spring.
Shoshone County Kellogg
Blue Anchor Trailer Court, Gloria’s Steak House and Bar and Snip and Dales Restaurant failed to perform coliform bacteria tests in the third quarter of 1999. They also failed to notify the public of their failure to perform tests, as required by state and federal law. If coliform bacteria is found in water samples it indicates disease-causing organisms could be present. Blue Anchor Trailer Court and Snip and Dales Restaurant performed tests in the fourth quarter and found no bacteria. Gloria’s was closed in the fourth quarter.
WASHINGTON
Pend Oreille County Newport
Attorney Linda Mathis is looking for new offices, after hers was gutted in a fire last week. Mathis’ office is in the same strip mall as Spokane Teachers Credit Union, which also was damaged by smoke. Over $100,000 in damage was done. Firefighters say the flames smoldered in Mathis’ office, before spreading. The credit union has temporarily moved to the Pend Oreille PUD office, while the law office is closed until further notice.
Spokane County Spokane
The Spokane Art School has asked the Spokane Park Board to use Coeur d’Alene Park on June 2-4 for the annual Artfest celebration. It traditionally has been at the Cheney Cowles Museum, but the museum is under construction for a major expansion. The Park Board also was asked to allow controlled sales of alcohol.
Whitman County Colfax
Colfax High School junior Brandon “B.J.” Bobst’s artwork has been selected for the cover of the “Colfax 2000 Edition, The Town and Its People,” a welcome book available to the public through the chamber of commerce. The 18-year-old designed the winning artwork in pen and ink as part of Cheryl Lothspeich’s CHS art class. He received a $100 savings bond in recognition of his work. Bobst is the son of Elaine and John Burns of Colfax.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
Two young male mountain lions were removed from residential areas around Libby. The lions weighed 35 to 45 pounds and had killed several house cats. One lion was found under a house and the other was chased into a tree by hound dogs. An employee of the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks said the lions were a threat to public safety. Residents are reminded not to feed deer because deer attract the lions.
