Alli Nieman scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Susan Woolf added 17 points and six boards to lead Idaho to a 71-59 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a Big West Conference opener Friday night at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The Vandals (8-6, 1-0) shot 52 percent (23-44) from the floor for the game.

Cal Poly (4-9, 0-1) made just 33 percent (22 of 67) from the field.

Odessa Jenkins came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points for Cal Poly.

Rikki Jackson dished out five assists and Nieman added four steals for Idaho.

The Vandals finished with a 36-35 advantage on the boards, but Cal Poly outrebounded Idaho 17-7 on the offensive end.

Whitworth 81, Pacific 63

Junior forward Jamie Wakefield finished with 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting and added 11 rebounds as the Pirates defeated the Boxers in a Northwest Conference game at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates trailed 7-6 in the opening minutes, but put together a 10-0 run on baskets by five different players to go ahead 23-12 midway through the half. Whitworth (8-4, 2-1 NWC) led by as much as 69-46 when Star Olson hit a long 2-point field goal with 9 minutes left in the game. It was Olson’s seventh point during a 90-second span as she finished with 13 points. Sophomore forward Jaime Dreewes came off the bench and finished with 12 points. Senior forward Lesley Upham led the Boxers (7-5, 1-3) with 12 points.

The Pirates play host to first-place Linfield tonight.
