West Valley Falls

Border League boys

Matt Dlouhy, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, scored 14 of his 21 points in the first half, including three dunks, and Lake City knocked off previously unbeaten West Valley 73-61 Friday in a Border League game at Coeur d’Alene.

WV trimmed an 18-point Timberwolves lead to six with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. But Dlouhy’s 3-pointer late in the third quarter built the lead to 14.

WV’s Tony Kopp, who came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, hit both ends of an one-and-one to cut LC’s advantage to 59-52 with 3:27 left.

WV coach Jamie Nilles bemoaned a charging foul assessed to Kris Sly, whose driving layup and possible free-throw - had the call been in the Eagles’ favor - could have cut LC’s lead to three points with 1:34 left.

“I thought we had a huge chance there when the three-point play was called away,” Nilles said.

Nilles hopes his team learns a valuable lesson.

“We can’t come out in the first quarter like that and let a team get all over us and expect to come back,” Nilles said. “We’ve been spoiled a little bit. We’ve been winning a lot of close games.”

Lake City hit 14 of 20 free throws in the game’s final 2-1/2 minutes.

West Valley, ranked No. 4 in the State 3A ranks, defeated the Timberwolves 56-41 in mid-December. Lake City has rebounded with eight consecutive wins.

“It’s funny how the schedule works out for you sometimes,” said Lake City coach Jim Winger, whose team lost at Cheney 33-30 before hitting rock-bottom at WV. “Maybe it was the best thing that happened to us. I guess we’ve fixed what happened there.”

The crowd was estimated at 1,100.
