District Sets Forum On Exiting Standards

The Coeur d’Alene School District would like to know how you feel about exiting standards proposed for graduating seniors.

The district has scheduled a forum Feb. 1 and 3 to review the proposed state standards to see how they fit with community expectations.

This process will help the school board decide how to approach curriculum revision this summer.

The forum will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lake City High School.

Exiting standards likely will be approved by the state Legislature this session. If the standards become a graduation requirement, the first students that would be affected are this year’s seventh-graders. The standards were approved by the state Board of Education. Local districts would have the option of raising, but not lowering, the standards.

On Tuesday, forum participants will hear how the standards were developed. Then, they will divide into teams to discuss them by subject area, including health, math, language arts, science and social studies. Teams will compare the standards with 41 statements the local community identified as skills and knowledge a senior should have upon graduation.

On Thursday, teams will report back to the entire group.
