Blue Devils Sweep Northstars
The Northwest Athletics Blue Devils pulled off the doubleheader sweep they needed to have a chance to win the Senior American Legion baseball title.
Steve Hare allowed three hits over five innings and struck out sevenon Saturday as the Blue Devils defeated the Northstars 13-2 at Jackson Field night to complete their sweep.
In the opener, Patrick Donovan struck out eight and Jason Wederspahn had two RBI singles during a 6-2 Blue Devils win.
The Blue Devils (12-6) began the day one game behind the Northstars (12-8). The Blue Devils will win the title, and a bye during the first two rounds of the Legion playoffs, by winning one of two against the Pullman Patriots today.
Wederspahn and George Bell had two-run triples to lead the Blue Devils in the second game.
Dan Staton went 3 for 3 and Mike Kuck doubled twice and had an RBI for the Northstars in the first game.
Golf
Jeff Quinney of Eugene (Ore.) Country Club defeated Canadian Han Lee 5 and 4 in the championship match of the 99th Pacific Northwest Golf Association men’s amateur championship at Bandon (Ore.) Dunes Golf Course.
Quinney, the 1998 PNGA champion, will be a senior at Arizona State University this fall.
Volleyball
Shayla Bush had 15 kills and Ferris teammate Devon Herron added 24 assists as the 4A East defeated the West 15-1, 15-4, 16-14 at Shadle Park in the all-state tournament.
The West won the 3A/2A and 1A/B matches at Shadle. The West also swept all three matches at Wenatchee on Friday.
Tasha Swinney of State B champion Garfield-Palouse had 12 assists for the East in the 1A/B match.
