Trail Dedication At 1 P.M. Today

A dedication ceremony for the North Idaho Centennial Trail will take place at 1 p.m. today at Huetter Rest Stop, on Interstate 90, eastbound between Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene.

The public is invited to attend the event. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

The Centennial Trail will be dedicated as Idaho’s Millennium Legacy Trail, one of 52 trails to receive national recognition last fall from the White House Millennium Council, the Department of Transportation and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The Centennial Trail was selected to represent Idaho because it best embodied Idaho’s culture and spirit.

The Centennial Trail was created in 1989. Formerly a railroad track, the trail follows the route of explorer John Mullan’s first road through the area. The trail runs along Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River and it eventually crosses into Washington.

The Millennium Legacy status qualifies the trail for grants, including $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts. That money will go toward public art to be placed on the trail.

Next week, the Centennial Trail will be featured on the federal government’s trail Web site, at www.millenniumtrails.org.
