Benewah County St. Maries
Local 4-H member Ty Stoltey won Grand Champion Beef Showman at the 65th annual Junior Livestock Show in Spokane. He also took third in the quality competition. Other club members who placed at the show are Jessica Stoltey, who placed second in beef quality and received a purple ribbon in showmanship; Justin Blakley, who won Grand Champion Swine in quality and placed first in beef livestock judging; and Cameron Lockard, who received a blue ribbon in both showmanship and quality for his sheep.
Bonner County Ponderay
To combat the county’s high incidence of home and wildland fires, city and rural fire departments and state and federal firefighting agencies are teaming up to provide information on using fire wisely and creating a defensive space around homes. A County Fire Prevention Cooperative educational barbecue begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bonner Mall parking lot. Smokey Bear will be on hand.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The County Fair Board will dedicate the 2000 fair to Joan Poppino. Poppino has been involved with 4-H for 21 years, nine of which she served as program assistant. The board members want to acknowledge and thank her for her dedication and hard work.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Auditions for the musical, “Smoke on the Mountain,” will be at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at Lake City Playhouse in Coeur d’Alene. Seven adults are needed. Performers who play banjo, guitar, piano, bass, harmonica and fiddle are preferred, but not required. Auditions will include a one minute vocal selection. A pianist will be provided but those who audition must bring their own music. Call 667-1323.
Latah County Moscow
The First Presbyterian Church of Moscow celebrated its 120th anniversary with an open house and reception Saturday and guest preachers during Sunday’s services. David and Laura Stellmon, pastors of three churches in Michigan, were the guests. David’s parents are Bill and Barbara Stellmon of Moscow.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The North Idaho Injury Prevention Coalition encourages parents to have child safety seat installations checked by a certified safety technician. Appointments are needed. The service is free. Inspections are at the Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene police departments, the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, and Kootenai, Hayden Lake and Shoshone fire protection districts. Donations are needed for new seats for those who can’t afford them. Safety seat classes are held monthly. Call the Panhandle Health District at 667-3481 to register.

The annual Newport Rodeo gets under way at 7:30 Friday night. The action includes a cowboy breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, live entertainment in the park and a crafts fair. Knudtsen Chevrolet in Coeur d’Alene has sponsored the $800 barrel-racing purse. For information, call (509) 447-3423.

The Spokane Bar Association recently elected four officers for 2000-01. Carl Hueber was elected president; Nancy Isserlis, vice president; Laurie Connelly, secretary and Michael Price, treasurer. New trustees elected were George Ahrend, Susan Troppmann and Phillip “Dutch” Wetzel. Erika Balazs, Scott Mason and William Maxey will continue as trustees for a second year.
Whitman County Pullman
Thirty-two members of Taiwan’s National Pingtung University of Science and Technology student body and faculty will be on the Washington State University campus June 26-30 to meet with university officials. The weeklong visit by the delegation includes meetings with department and student affairs officials plus other campus activities. Rob Cassleman, assistant to the director of International Programs, is in charge of the group’s schedule.

Taxidermist Phil Soucy won three of four top awards during the Western Regional Taxidermy Championships in Casper, Wyo. Soucy’s record cougar mount took the People’s Choice, Taxidermists’ Choice and Judges’ Choice awards. He’s been in the business since 1984 and started competing 13 years ago.
