Knowledge Bowls

Pick up one of the mixes from Rill Foods and you don’t just get a bowl of soup. You get a history lesson.

When they decided to package some of their most popular soups for home cooks, the owners of the Thorp, Wash., grocery store and deli named them after area landmarks. For example, the Liberty Gold chickpea and pasta soup pictured here honors nearby Liberty, born as a boom town during the gold rush of the late 1800s.

Other choices range from Tekoa split pea soup to Taneum Canyon chili.

Price: About $5 for 9 ounces (makes 10 cups).

Available: In Spokane at Huckleberry’s Natural Market and at Marketplace Gifts (Valley Mall and NorthTown).
