Vandals Shot Putter Takes 2Nd
Joachim Olsen was Idaho’s only competitor at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Event Center on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Ark., but his performance Friday didn’t go unnoticed.
Olsen finished second and earned All-America honors in the men’s shot put with a toss of 64 feet, 8-3/4 inches. Jannus Robberts of Southern Methodist University won the event with a 65-5-1/4 mark.
Ian Waltz was the only placer among the four Washington State athletes competing Friday.
Waltz, a Post Falls native, finished fifth in the men’s shot put and earned his sixth All-America honor. Waltz tossed the shot 62-5-3/4.
Also for the Cougars, Arend Watkins finished eighth in the men’s 60-meter high hurdles preliminary race and didn’t advance. He had the fourth-best time this season heading into the meet.
Becky Potter placed 15th in the women’s 20-pound weight throw.
Alishia Booterbaugh failed to qualify for the women’s 800-meter finals. She placed seventh in her heat, 14th overall.
WSU’s Whitney Evans competes in the women’s high jump and Demetrius Murray competes in the men’s triple jump.
“It was not an especially great day for the Cougs,” said WSU coach Rick Sloan. “But we’ll see if we can come home with a couple more All-Americans after (today).”
Clemson’s Shawn Crawford won the men’s 200 in an American collegiate-record 20.26 seconds, beating Florida’s John Capel, who had the same time.
The finish was so close that the winner and runner-up had to be separated by thousandths of a second. Under that method, Crawford was timed at 20.252 and Capel, last year’s NCAA outdoor champion, at 20.257.
