Cards Make Several Changes In Upcoming Softball Schedule

North Idaho College has announced several changes to its softball schedule.

The NIC-Columbia Basin matchup Tuesday has been canceled. The NIC-Yakima Valley game will be played Thursday at 2 p.m.

NIC’s game with a University of Idaho club team has been moved from April 18 to April 19.

College track and field

Seattle Pacific’s Laura Widman, a graduate of Colfax High, holds a big lead after the first day of the heptathlon at the Eastern Washington University Combined Events Invitational at Woodward Stadium.

Widman won the high jump (5-foot-5), shot put (37-5) and 200-meter run (25.69 seconds). She totaled 2,970 points, 360 more than runner-up Shalene Little of Ricks College.

Today’s heptathlon events are the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

EWU’s Eric Boyd is the leader after five events of the decathlon. Boyd totaled 3,704 points to hold a 49-point edge over Bryan Anderson, who is competing unattached.

College swimming

Whitworth’s Brent Rice captured ninth place in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Division III men’s championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Rice’s time was 1 minute, 53.96 seconds. Rice competes today in the 400 IM.

Whitworth’s Ben Swinehart didn’t qualify in the 500 freestyle.

Whitworth is in 29th place in the team race. Kenyon (Ohio) College has a 100-point lead in its attempt to win its 21st consecutive national title.

College crew

Gonzaga University’s men and women will open the spring racing season Saturday against Washington State in the annual Fawley Cup Regatta.

The dual match will start at 10 a.m. at Suncrest Park on Long Lake. Eight races are scheduled, capped by the men’s varsity 4 at 12:20 p.m.

GU will have two other home regattas this season.

Prep basketball

Three area players earned all-tournament honors during the State 3A and 1A tournaments two weeks ago.

Lance Pecht, season scoring leader for West Valley’s sixth-place finisher, was named to the boys 3A team.

Pecht was the tournament’s No. 2 scorer, with 84 points in four games. He led the tournament in 3-pointers, with 13, and was the leading free-throw shooter at 92.9 percent.

Jeff Hyndman of Freeman made the boys 1A all-tourney team. He averaged 12.8 points and 7.8 rebounds for the fourth-place Scotties.

Becky VanTine of seventh-place Colfax made the girls 1A second team. VanTine tied for fifth at 18.3 ppg and was second with 11.3 rpg.
