Highlights from the past week in the Idaho Legislature.

They said it

“We were glad to see the smoke coming so we didn’t have to eat the dirt anymore.” - Rep. John Campbell, R-Sandpoint, remembering the dust storms before Kentucky bluegrass farming began in North Idaho, during a briefing on grass burning in the House Environmental Affairs Committee.

Votes

Here are some of the votes by North Idaho lawmakers in the past week:

School reporting: Members of the senate voted to approved SB 1484, 30-4. The bill would require school districts to publish health and safety issues for school buildings in a local paper. Voting in favor of the bill were Sens. Clyde Boatright, R-Rathdrum; Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint; Marguerite McLaughlin, D-Orofino; Jack Riggs, R-Coeur d’Alene.

Teaching patriotism: The House approved a measure that would require the American flag to be displayed in all public school classrooms and require all students to say the pledge of allegiance or sing the national anthem every day. All the representatives from North Idaho voted for the measure including, Reps. John Campbell, R-Sandpoint; June Judd, D-St. Maries; Jerry Stoicheff, D-Sandpoint; Jeff Alltus, R-Hayden; Jim Clark, R-Hayden; Chuck Cuddy, D-Orofino; Hilde Kellogg, R-Post Falls; Wayne Meyer, R-Rathdrum; Don Pischner, R-Coeur d’Alene; Mary Lou Shepherd, D-Prichard.

Species department: The Senate approved the creation of the Office of Species Conservation 29-4. The office will work on threatened and endangered species issues in Idaho’s negotiations with the federal government on the Endangered Species Act. SB 1490 comes with a $500,000 price tag. Voting for the legislation were Sens. Boatright, Crow, Keough, McLaughlin, and Riggs.
