Designated hitter Brandon O’Leary doubled and homered, and three pitchers combined on a two-hitter as NAIA top-ranked Lewis-Clark State defeated Whitworth 3-0 Wednesday in a non-conference baseball game played at Lewiston.

Nic Puckett (3-0), Garnet Jensen and Jake Kor combined to hold the Pirates (6-10) to two singles.

Starter Puckett pitched four no-hit innings, striking out eight and walking none. Kor pitched the final three innings, fanning five and walking one.

O’Leary hit his second homer of the season and had two runs batted in for the Warriors (24-4).

Whitworth’s Kent Hibbard (0-2) went the distance, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Hibbard settled down after a two-run first inning.

Justin McKitterick and Matt Squires had Whitworth’s hits.

Marc Rittenhouse hit two homers, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the sixth, and had six RBIs to lead Washington to a 16-11 non-conference win over Southern Utah at St. George, Utah.

Rittenhouse, a junior center fielder, led off the game with a homer to left. His grand slam broke a 7-all tie.

Washington, which had trailed 6-1 after three innings, improved to 7-10. The Thunderbirds are 8-10.

Track and field

Washington State University All-Americans Ellannee Richardson, Whitney Evans and Megan Maynard will redshirt during the outdoor season, coach Rick Sloan announced.

Richardson, a sophomore from Gladstone, Ore., was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (lower back) in February. The 1999 American junior recordholder and All-American in the heptathlon has not competed since the first meet of the indoor season. She finished fourth in the heptathlon at the 1999 NCAA championships and placed second in the event at the 1999 Pac-10 championships.

Evans of Calgary, Alberta, will sit out to rehabilitate her right knee, because of tendinitis. The 1999 Canadian junior heptathlon record-holder finished seventh in the heptathlon at the NCAA championships.

Maynard, a junior distance runner from Langley, Wash., who earned All-American honors during the 1998 cross country season, has recurring health problems.

WSU’s men and women will be among a field of more than 1,000 competitors at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. Athletes from Bay Area high schools as well as collegiate and elite track clubs will compete in the two-day meet.

Women’s crew

WSU, ranked No. 21, will welcome No. 17 Oregon State and the University of Victoria at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.

The Cougars won’t have another home regatta this season. The varsity eight, the featured race, is scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
