Mead Topples Nc In Ot

Mead midfielder Ryan Mulvey has played club soccer with North Central’s Dustin Allbery, Aaron Fielder and Brad Cushman for more than four years.

So when the Panthers senior booted the match-winning goal with 2 minutes left in the second overtime Wednesday, he earned bragging rights.

Mead rallied from a two-goal first-half deficit to hand NC its first loss of the season, 3-2, on a rainy afternoon at Mead High School. It was the Greater Spokane League opener for both.

Mulvey also passed to Matt Folsom for the tying goal at 78 minutes.

“This was like a dream come true,” Mulvey said of his first goal of the season and the biggest of his career. “I was so nervous coming in. This is the best way to go out (against them). We’re always talking to each other about it and they were always saying they were going to beat us.”

Mead (4-1), coming off a disappointing non-league shootout loss to University, outshot NC (5-1) 14-12 for its first victory over the Indians since 1996.

“They’re a group of guys who like each other and are as intent as I am to bring Mead back to where we have been in the past,” said coach Travis Hanson.

Mulvey said last year’s Panthers wouldn’t have fought back.

“We were fired up and we wanted it,” he said. “It showed a lot for the team to come back.”

Sophomore Danny Stockinger scored at 18 minutes for NC’s first goal, then Aaron Fielder followed with a goal 5 minutes later as the Indians took a 2-0 lead.

Elliot Fauske put the Panthers on the board at 63 minutes when he lofted the ball over the hands of Cushman, NC’s goalie. Fauske spent last summer with the Spokane Shadow as one of the team’s under-19 developmental players.

NC played without senior Bobby Johnson. He injured his right knee Sunday in a Shadow tryout and will miss at least three weeks.

In other GSL openers, Sam Stoner scored three second-half goals to rally Gonzaga Prep (2-3-1 overall) to a 4-3 win over visiting Ferris (3-2). Matt Corley, replacing injured Clint Roberts, sent a through ball to Stoner for the winner at 77 minutes… . Grant Lundberg scored the final goal during a 5-4 shootout and Bryce Warren tipped out one Shadle Park attempt, preserving a 1-0 win for Lewis and Clark (2-3-1) at Hart Field. Shadle (1-6) hit the post with a shot just before the end of regulation… . Cam Murphy scored twice as Central Valley (4-1-1) piled up a 5-0 win at Rogers (0-5)… . Kirk Jones scored twice and Scott Tarbutton added the tiebreaking goal, and University (4-2) notched a 3-2 win at Mt. Spokane (2-3)… . Jake Moug totaled four goals and two assists to lead Riverside (5-0, 2-0) to an 8-1 win over visiting Chewelah (0-3, 0-2) in the GNL.

Dean Neppel allowed one hit after the first inning, and Dusty Druffel had two runs batted to lead Pullman (1-0) to a 5-3 win at Lakeside (2-1) in the Great Northern League. Nick Paulson’s one-out single in the sixth drove in the go-ahead run for the Greyhounds.

Neil Litchfield homered twice and had four RBIs to lead Lewiston (2-0) to a 19-2 win at Lake City (0-1) in the Border League… . Also in the league, Nathan Lumper hit a two-out, two-run homer in the third, helping Clarkston (3-0) to a 5-4 win at Post Falls (0-1). Rain and darkness ended the game after six.

Softball

Kaylene Fountain struck out 15 and pitched a perfect game for four innings, leading Lewis and Clark (2-0) to a 4-1 Greater Spokane League win at Central Valley (1-1). LC’s Ashley Andrews had an RBI double in the fourth.

Melissa Hedges struck out nine as visiting Chewelah (1-1) defeated Deer Park 15-6 to salvage a split of a Great Northern League doubleheader. DP (1-2) won the opener 19-1, as Alyssa Major struck out 10 and had four RBIs. … Also in the GNL, Thera Hattenburg struck out six and Riverside (1-0) scored seven unearned runs during an eight-run fifth to defeat visiting Colfax (0-1) 9-3.
