Soccer: Rogers Pulls Back

The Rogers girls soccer team will play a non-league schedule this fall, dropping most Greater Spokane League games in order to develop the team by playing teams of a more equal skill level.

Coach Chris Sande proposed the idea last fall after realizing the Pirates would be less competitive in the 2000 season after losing some talented seniors. He said the change is only for one year.

Rogers has gone 1-26-1 in the past two seasons and has not won a GSL match in more than five years, Sande said.

The Pirates will play against teams from the Frontier League, Border League and Great Northern League, and a couple GSL teams.

“It’s kind of a developmental step,” Sande said. “It will basically give us 32 games to be able to compete against teams rather than just chasing the ball around and playing defense the whole time.”
